Concepts#

Sheds are an excellent opportunity for installation of solar panels, they are usually accessible, often have easy to work with structures and likely fall under some sort of permitted development. Most people focus on installing panels onto the shed roof but depending on the orientation it might be possible to install them onto the walls as well. A shed is probably the best place to start adding your solar panels.

Walls

Walls#

Walls aren’t often used as a location for solar panels and potentially provide a unique position to take advantage of a particular angle to collect the optimal amount of solar energy. While traditionlly in the Nothern Hemisphere people have focused on south facing locations, an east or west facing wall can give you early morning or later afternoon sun which might compliment your energy use (and obviously vice versa in the Southern Hemisphere). It may also be that the wall is your only accessible location and due to the cheapness of panels it now becomes viable to take advantage of any space you have. It might also be that your roof is just not accessible, or wouldn’t be structurally safe to add a panel to or the material just makes it hard to use (e.g. slate tiles).

Balcony

Balcony Solar#

Balcony Solar usually consists of a few solar panels which secure onto a balcony railing and then are attached to a plug-in inverter or microinverter, the energy captured can then be used to offset electricity bills. While not particularly stealthy, balcony solar improves the access of solar particularly to those who don’t own their own property. Balcony Solar has driven technological development such as the plug-in inverter which can also be used for other forms of stealth solar such as sheds and wall installation. While well established in a number of European countries Balcony Solar hasn’t yet been well adopted in countries such as the UK and USA however with changes to legislation this is likely to change in the near future.

Fences

Fences#

Concepts#

Fences are an underutilised location for stealth solar, the key factor is the positon of the fences, avoiding too much shading and its easier to attadch the panel to the existing fence or perhaps even use the panels as a fence - in many situations its cheaper to purchase solar panels then fence panels themselves.

There are a variety of ways to have ground mounted solar panels, at the most basic it can be just putting panels on the ground and wiring them up to generate power and at its most complex can be constructed on angled platforms that exist over farmland creating a dual land usage known as agrivoltics.

Just lying your panels on the ground is often how people first start, this temporary option is very easy and allows you to start to get to understand how panels work and how you can use them. There are obvious disadvantages, flat panels aren’t angled at an optimum angle so won’t generate as much power, they also take up a lot of space, if put over vegetation will likely block the sun and kill the plants underneath. There is also the risk of damage to the panels if they are unintentially walked over.

Tables

Solar Tables#

Also known as “solartisch”

Concept#

Developed for situations where it wasn’t possible to install balcony solar, solar tables are simply solar panels built into the form of a table. The solar table can then be placed on the balcony and can have a dual role, therefore avoiding any local rules or regulations.

Often a sturdy framed solar panel is choosen and legs are bolted onto the 4 corners, in more advanced options a frame might be built around the panel and then hinges added to one side to allow one side of the panel to be tilted up to improve the angle when the table isn’t being used. It is recommended to use a tablecloth when using it as a table to avoid damaging the panel surface. Also care should be taken in regards to routing the cable to avoid it being a trip hazard.

Trailer and Trolleys

Trailers and Trolleys#

Attaching solar panels to a trailer or trolley is an easy way to setup solar panels and remain stealthy. By definition this creates a temporary setup which is mobile (though sometimes they are perhaps a little less mobile/almost static). This will likely get round various planning requirements but also the mobility would allow you to orientate the panels to improve efficiency or take them with you if you move.

This page is hidden in menu#
